A man and woman have been arrested over the death of a toddler who was found unconscious at a home.The 21-month-old girl was taken to hospital in a critical condition from a property in Northfield, Birmingham, on Sunday. She died on Wednesday evening. The man, aged 28, and woman, 30, were arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing serious injury to a child and granted conditional bail. Insp Ian Wilkins said the death was currently being treated as unexplained.Midlands Live: School put in lock-down after reports of man carrying gun; Aga ends production at historic foundryHe said a post-mortem examination would be carried out “which will hopefully confirm the precise cause of death”. “This is a terribly sad case which has resulted in the death of a little girl,” he added. “Our inquiries will focus on determining whether any of the injuries she sustained were deliberately inflicted or whether this was a tragic accident.”
Emergency services had been called to an address in The Green at about 15:00 GMT on Sunday to reports the girl was unconscious.The arrested man and woman have been granted conditional bail to addresses away from the location where the child was reported injured while investigators conduct further inquiries and to allow time for medical tests to be completed, a police spokesman added.Anyone with information has been asked to call West Midlands Police or Crimestoppers anonymously.
